ERIKA EVA DORN
Eva passed away at the Riverview Health Centre on February 22, 2021, at age 88.
Erika was born in Meschken, Germany in 1932 and immigrated to Canada in 1954 with her husband Franz and children. The family settled in Winnipeg, Manitoba, first in Point Douglas, then relocated to Brooklands before finally settling in Wolseley. Her training and experience as a seamstress while in Germany allowed her to gain employment at Mallabars in Winnipeg. Once her children were independent, she began a new career in sales as an inventory clerk at Eaton's, where she showcased her fashion skills until her retirement in 1996.
She loved spending time cultivating numerous plants in her garden and within her home, and she was always proud to share them with family and friends. When she was not gardening, she was sewing, and often wore many of her own sewn, knitted, or crocheted articles in a fashionable sense. Erika was fiercely independent, exhibited great strength and tenacity, and lived her life on her own terms. She was knowledgeable on numerous current events and topics and enjoyed discussing politics. She enjoyed travelling with her family, both abroad and within Canada, and always found it a great adventure. Erika was a member of Lutheran Church of the Cross in Winnipeg for many years.
Erika was predeceased by her four brothers (Erwin, Siegfried, Dieter and Oskar Preuss) and survived by her sister-in-law Barbel Preuss of Germany. Mourning her passing are her children Thomas Dorn, Ester Woloschuk, Reiner Dorn (Christine Mazur), and Detlef Dorn (Kim); grandchildren Ian (Jenni), Kimberly, Jennifer, Jeffery, Lexy and Scarlette; great-grandchildren Gavin, Peyton and Bailey; and extended family David Woloschuk, Angie Mazur and Sofia Taylor. Also, nephew Thomas Preuss (Phil), niece Monika Mensen from Australia, and Astrid Bachtle (Wilfried) and Thomas Preuss (Andrea) from Germany.
Many thanks to all the neighbours who have helped Erika in her final years. The family is grateful for the services provided by the Winnipeg Paramedic Service, the Emergency Staff, Health Science Centre and the staff at Palliative Care, Riverview Health Center. We are also grateful for Pastor Tyler Gingrich, who attended Riverview to comfort and pray with us during these difficult times.
A private family service will be held at a later date. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Erika's memory to the Lutheran Urban Ministry Corp. at Room 25 – 560 Arlington Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3G 1Z5 or, to a charity of one's choice. Flowers are respectfully declined.
